Texas Casinos History

While it may not be as big as it used to be, casinos are a solid part of the state’s history. Galveston has earned the name of ‘Sin City of the Gulf’ after Las Vegas, the world’s most popular casino city at the beginning of the Civil War. Gambling, drinking, and prostitution happened out in the open, and the people of Galveston were proud of their wild hearts.

In the 1950s, things changed when General Wil Wilson closed all the bars and saloons. He even destroyed all gambling equipment. Casinos were illegal until the Federal government granted Native Americans the right to open casinos on their lands as they are considered sovereign land.

Texas Gambling Laws

The legal gambling age on Texas soil is 21, while 18 on casino boats. The future looks promising for the gambling industry in Texas. Currently they are expanding the Kickapoo.
